I really like your blog and your methods of training. I agree with everything that I read so far! I also believe that instilling fear into our dogs by mimicking painful dominant behaviors will only result in a negative outcome. You need to be firm, yet loving. It is the same when teaching children.
I'm getting a new puppy tomorrow and I thought that I would brush up on training information. Thank you!

In reply to <a href="https://shibashake.com/dog/dog-obedience-training-facts-and-myths/comment-page-1/#comment-8037">whitlock _janet</a>.

Hello Janet,
I just got a new Sibe puppy so I am getting a refresher course in puppy biting :)
Re crates: In general you want a puppy/dog to associate the crate with something safe and positive so that she will willingly go into it. For example, when one of my dogs had an allergic reaction to a bee bite, she went into her crate to recover.
The crate is very useful because it is a quiet place that my dogs associate with rest and safety - like a den. I crate all my dogs at night and they all go into it willingly. This ensures that everyone is calm and secure through the night.
Some people also use crates for when their dogs are home alone.
Crates are also very useful for potty training.
Re puppy biting: One thing that can help to stop puppy biting is the time-out. When a puppy bites too hard, you can take away puppy's freedom by putting her in a time-out.
In this way puppy learns that -
bite too hard = don't get to be with people
I use my laundry room as my time-out area because it is small, dark, and there is nothing to do in there. Any low stimulus area will work.
Some people use crates to give time-outs but that is generally not a good idea for the reasons stated above.
Here are a couple of articles on puppy biting -
