Great article. I have a Shiba/Akita type dog. He is actually a stray pup I raised. 10 years now. 2017. I do love him very much. He is everything You say. Good traits and bad. Mostly wants his freedom. Breaks off all restraints. Quiet, must have a purpose. Loyal, loves my company, hates when I leave house. Great protector. Beautiful boy. But stubborn. Must stay on leash to walk. Not a player, wont touch toys. Intelligent, loves water. Hard to manage. Use caution and patience, not force from aggression. Warn vets.
Your article Shibashake confirmed all my suspitions. Accurate information.

In reply to valerie.

Hello Valerie,

With the Sibes, supervision is the most important thing during potty training. With Lara, I took her out every 2 hours and also when she starts to show that she is about to potty - e.g. going to corners or circling. I make sure to reward her really well for pottying in the right place.

In this way she learns that-
potty inside = get interrupted and taken outside,
potty outside = lots of rewards, attention, and play.

I also put up an enclosure for her with potty pads, bedding, and water. When I cannot supervise, even for just one minute, I put Lara in her enclosure. This enclosure can also serve as a backup-potty area if I am unable to take Lara out for some reason. In this case, instead of taking her out, I just put her on her pad and give her the "go potty" command. I make sure to reward her very well for doing her potty in the right place.

This is more on what I did to housetrain my dogs.

Here is an article on the added challenges of housetraining small dogs.

Hi,

Just want to say i love your blog.

We recently got a mame shiba, which is a small version of the normal shiba, and we are having lots of trouble housebreaking her.

Fortunately she doesnt cry, nor bite and walks very well, but she refuses to go on the pad at home.

FYI: we live in tokyo in a big apparment building, go down 10 floors in time isnt easy at all.

She started peeing on our bed and refuses to use her toilet, even when we leave her at home when we go to work. And she pees on her bed.

We are a bit at loss of what to do.

She is 4 months and a half

thank you
