A Dog’s Halloween – Pumpkin Fun!

by shibashake 6 Comments

It is Halloween time, and while dogs are not allowed to have regular candy, they can have a lot of fun with pumpkins!

Last weekend, I got my dogs a small pumpkin.

I cut the top out and scooped out the insides. Scooping out the insides is a good idea because last year, they made a big mess with it. I also did not want them eating the gooey pumpkin insides.

Then I put some chicken into the now hollowed out pumpkin, and put the top back on.

This was of course, too little of a challenge for them. They quickly knocked the top off, and got to the chicken in short order.

Not enough of a Halloween challenge for the dogs.

To make things more challenging, I decided to stuff a Hollee-Roller Ball into the pumpkin.

Their Halloween mission – should they choose to accept it – is to get the pumpkin open, pull out the ball, and then get the piece of chicken out of the ball.

This was better, but still not enough of a challenge. My Shiba Inu and Siberian Husky not only accepted the mission, but got to the chicken without much effort.

A greater Halloween challenge for the dogs.

Then I got a better idea …

I used a screwdriver to make holes on the inside of the pumpkin shell, then, I stuffed little pieces of cheese into those holes. That really got them interested in the pumpkin, and they had a lot of fun trying to get the pieces of cheese out. Success!

Lots of pumpkin fun.
Siberian Shania had a lot of fun tearing the pumpkin shell apart.

Just make sure that your dog does not eat too much of the pumpkin as that may disturb his digestive system. Siberian Shania had a lot of fun tearing the pumpkin shell apart but she was not interested in eating the pieces.

Woof Woof! And a Happy Halloween to you!

Beware of the pumpkin thief!

Haha, I like coming up with new things to keep them on their toes, and see what their reaction is. I mostly get my ideas by observing them, and seeing how they react to different things. 😀

My shiba already thinks the pumpkins are his new toy ball! This would really make him want my “pretty decorations”. LOL

although we might pop her inside the pumpkin and watch her eat her way out.

LOL – it would be adorable to get pictures of her head coming out of the pumpkin! What an awesome Halloween card that would make 🙂

Take lots of pictures and share them with us.

I may have to try this with my mini dachshund/beagle mix… although we might pop her inside the pumpkin and watch her eat her way out. That would take all of, oh , five minutes. Hee hee
