Kawaii!
Dusty is an awesome Shiba who actually comes when called – Imagine that!!
Here is a comment excerpt from awesome Shiba parent Brendan –
“Just a quick note to offer hope to others that read that you can’t take your Shiba off a lead.
Well we have had Dusty a while now and after getting her over the panic of having a lead on we are now able to take her to the park and let her off her lead. I would not do this in a small park or near cars/roads.
Dusty is great for about 30 minutes then she starts to get a little over excited and want to chase birds or becomes very aloof and is hard to get back. we them put her back on the lead for 15 minutes before allowing her off again. its working great. we have been working very closely with the trainers on her recall prior to doing this.”

Great advice thanks!
Couldnt ignor dusty tho it would break hers and my heart she is always so pleased to have me home.
Might try giving her the run of the whole house apart from the bedrooms and see how she does with that
Thanks

Hey Guys
Any ideas on the following.
Dusty still sleeping in her cage at night as she seems to really like this. when he leave the door open to let her have run on the kitchen (very large kitchen) she cries. We want to get her out of the cage so she has just a bed in the kitchen and all the space she wants. Thinking about buying her a bed that has sides and a roof to it. any other idea’s??
i think she likes the idea of being safe in her cage and she has had it since we got her but i feel mean locking her in at night and what her to have more freedom. Is anyone hear crazy enough to let there dog have the run of the whole house at night?
Also off topic does anyone’s shiba have a little we when they get over excited to see you? for example when i get in from work its a good bet to come in the back way so when she comes to meet me she is already in the garden as 9 times out for 10 she will have a little wee as she is making her happies noises and greeting me
Thanks

Hey Brendan,
Always very good to see you and Dusty!
Re sleeping – Sephy still sleeps in the crate in our bedroom. I think with him, he really wants to be in the bedroom with us. Sometimes, he will ask to go downstairs. This usually only happens when he comes back from the vet and prefers to be alone.
When he asks to leave, we usually let him have the whole house except for the bedroom. Once he leaves the bedroom, he doesn’t get to come back to the bedroom. If he is free rein in the bedroom, he will usually start doing his Shiba moves, get under the bed and start biting, or otherwise try to wake us up.
This way – Sephy gets to choose – stay in the crate in the bedroom, or have freedom in the whole house except for the bedroom. And everyone else gets a good night’s sleep š
Re little wee – That sounds very much like excited urination. One way to address excited urination is to make greetings more low key. One of the dogs in my training class had this issue, and the trainer also suggested ignoring the dog for a short while until the dog is calm. Probably difficult to do with Dusty š
I also like the article on excitement urination from the Humane Society –

Thanks! I think he’s pretty handsome. Those pictures are pretty old. I’ll get some new ones up soon. He has gotten a little bigger. I do think he is larger than the average Shiba. He will be 1 year old on August 1!
The 5 canvas blue picture? I painted that a few years back. It was my first (and so far last) painting that I’ve done. If it is not that one you are referring to then I am not sure which one it is.
Congrats on the swimming!! Reptar gets out in the water until he can’t walk any further and then just stands there and watches the other dogs swim. Looking forward to the day we get a breakthrough like that!

Reptar is such a good looking boy. he has such a knowing look about him.
Off topic the blue picture you have in your lounge looks really nice where did you get it from?
brendan says
yeah we got her used to it by getting her in from the garden and showing her the tin foil and then giving her some bacon!
lucky she is so active or she would be the size of a house š
she is only 10.2kg and looks great although i do think she is a small shiba as in other people pics they look bigger than dusty!
good luck.
we had a real break though the other day an managed to get dusty to go swimming down on the beach. it was so nice to watch. we took her down with two black labs and she was rasing them out into the sea to get the ball. she loved it. I will try and get a pic of this next time i go.

Thanks Brendan! It’s all about the treats with Shibas huh? Did you practice this at home or in a familiar place first?
I will definitely try this! Great info.

Sorry its taken me so long to reply but what SS said is good advice. The other thing we do is take out some kitchen foil. Dusty knows that this normally has bacon in which is her fav and we only allow her this treat when we are out. She gets one bit when we are first in the park and taking the leash off and so she knows we have bacon in it. She gets the second bit when we call her back and she lets us put her lead on.
She is so smart that when we use foil in the kitchen for something else she gets all happy and does her funny noises thinking she is going to get some bacon.
My advice would be to find out what your little mans fav treat is and then as mean as it sounds only let him have it when out walking at the start of the walk and then again when he lets you put him back on his lead. Keep it in something different like tin foil so they know when you have it
Good luck
