Super Shiba Inu Dusty!

by shibashake 23 Comments

Kawaii!

Dusty is an awesome Shiba who actually comes when called – Imagine that!!

Here is a comment excerpt from awesome Shiba parent Brendan –

“Just a quick note to offer hope to others that read that you can’t take your Shiba off a lead.

Super Shiba Inu Dusty!

Well we have had Dusty a while now and after getting her over the panic of having a lead on we are now able to take her to the park and let her off her lead. I would not do this in a small park or near cars/roads.

Dusty is great for about 30 minutes then she starts to get a little over excited and want to chase birds or becomes very aloof and is hard to get back. we them put her back on the lead for 15 minutes before allowing her off again. its working great. we have been working very closely with the trainers on her recall prior to doing this.”

Right now I’m using SlideShow Pro. I think I may switch over to WordPress though. I’ve used it recently for work and it was much easier than I thought it would be. Thanks!

I am a big fan of WordPress. Their new release (3.0) has some pretty nice features and it is not too difficult to add in new capabilities by expanding your theme or writing a plugin.

Let me know how it goes with WP. It is my second favorite thing to do 😀

    Thanks for the info!!

I think #2 is what I’m going to try. I’m hoping to be able to let him off a leash when at the lake so he can play with other dogs and go in the water as pleases. Keeping a drag lead on him in this situation makes me nervous if it gets caught, or getting tangled with another dog etc.

They are smart, sometimes too smart. I can’t keep up! Reptar is almost always 1 step ahead of me. Crazy pooch. Slow is definately the key word here! Like you said, “Keep Shiba Guessing”!! Thanks for the tips.

I need to update his pictures…I also need to find an easier and quicker way to upload pictures to a slide show. Any recommendations? He’s getting so big. I love his tail! It’s multicolored and sometimes reminds me of a Cheerio!

Hmmm – what are you using right now?

I use WordPress for mine and it is pretty easy to do. I only need to select all the images I want to download, and it gets stored in the WordPress media library. Then there are a variety of plugins I can use to display the images.

I’m not sure where to post this question but since Dusty is so good at walking off leash, I decided to post it here.

My question is about putting the leash back on your Shiba. When we’re outside (in a fenced in backyard at the moment) and he is not on a tie out, and we go to put him on a leash or a tie out, he will come to us but the second we try to leash him, he runs away. Even if we reward, or bribe, him. He either thinks we’re playing with him, or he knows we’re taking away his “freedom”. I can see this being a huge deterrent for off leash play. Are there any tips or tricks for happily and easily getting them back on the leash?

I know of two ways to approach this.

      1. Put the leash on before he gets to go out.
This is what I usually do with Sephy. He likes to go out, so the condition is I put a leash on him before he goes. If he doesn’t want to put the leash or collar on, then he doesn’t get to go out. This works very well with Sephy.

      2. Keep Shiba guessing.
Putting a lead on Shiba once he is free-rein outside will be more difficult. This is because Reptar knows that putting on the lead means less freedom and Shibas do love their freedom.

One thing you can try is to keep Reptar guessing. Call him to you many times while he is outside but most of the time, he just gets a treat and some affection, and then let him go again. Other times play tug or some other fun game with him, them let him go again. Sometimes, put the lead on him, then take it off at once, and let him go. In this way, he won’t always associate coming and putting on the lead with loss of freedom.

Shibas are smart though, so you want to go slowly. Initially I would just focus more on rewarding and playing with him. Then once he is coming on a regular basis, you can try putting on the lead and then taking it off immediately.

Hugs to Reptar. I was looking over his pictures again today – such a handsome boy. I also just noticed that he has a double curl in his tail! Sephy has that too. I always think of a French beret whenever Sephy is strutting around and his tail is bobbing along at a jaunty angle 😀

Thanks for all the kind feedback guys. I am pleased that other are having joy in walking their shiba’s off lead as well.
What you say Kaiks is very true. Dusty also loves to get other dogs to chase her, the bigger the better but is very aware when other don’t want to play and will run straight back to me and my partner to comfort before looking for another play date.

We are just having the joy of our first moulting at the moment and have brought every different type of brush/comb in the shop to try and help but Dusty is very picky over the ones she will let us use on her and it has to be paired with a treat and lots of belly rubs (such a smart girl)

Dusty is one good looking Shiba! I showed my husband Dusty’s pictures and he thought I was showing him Reptar! Thanks again for sharing all the pictures. Brendan, that is one pretty girl!

My wife and I have been taking our six month old boy Senbei to an off-leash park since he was four months old. We have have a few worrying incidents but he is usually quite responsive to us and he is very good at interpretting other dogs’ characters. He loves to instigate a chase and understands when he is not welcome. I have to admit that the park we go to has very welcoming and friendly owners.
Now that Senbei is a teenager we are being careful and trying to nip any problems in the bud. His parents were both walked off leash and the breeder has given us advice in how to go about it.

Last few days there may have been some ’security check’ errors while rendering this gallery. This was a result of caching issues within my blog. It should all be resolved by now.

    My humblest apologies to Dusty.

Please let me know if you continue to see ’security check’ errors on this page. Thank you.

Hahaha – that is too funny.

I don’t know what it is with GSDs but my Shiba loves them as well. Unfortunately, the feeling is frequently not mutual and it usually ends with Sephy doing his Shiba whine.

You gotta get a picture with Dusty on the back of the GSD! That would be too precious. And you gotta help Dusty win over that other dog – who does she think she is anyway – messing with a Shiba 😉

Bless that’s my baby. she is such a good girl. She however is now in love with a German shepherd (trainers own dog) who is massive but this does not faze dusty and she has started climbing on his back!!! I am very pleased that he is so good tempered with her but alas already has eyes for another dog so dusty is out of luck lol.
