I would take her to the vet ASAP. My dogs do not enjoy going to the vet either, but it is sometimes necessary. If there are fleas in her environment, that would need to be managed as well. I also use a flea and tick prevention product on my dogs, but this is something that should be discussed with her vet.

After the skin and physical issues are addressed, I would visit with a good trainer/behaviorist and slowly desensitize her to various grooming exercises.

To help my dog get more comfortable with grooming, I start small, go slowly, and make the experience very positive and rewarding. I absolutely stay away from techniques that will frighten him more, and cause him to become even more fearful of water or grooming.

I adopted a Shitu from our local animal shelter and was not knowledgeable about the breed at all. Very, Very, Very anxious at everything...grooming, other dogs, baths, water you name it. Sheba has finally bonded with the family, took some time. We can not bath her and her coat is ful full and sheds repeatedly. She is constantly chewing at herself and probably has a ton of fleas, etc. I devised a method of bathing by submerging the kennel into water which freaks Sheba out but the amount of critters falling off her was tremendous. She still chews, chews and chew ...her feet, mouth, legs with constant shaking...I need to do something...what do you suggest? She completely freaks out when we make a trip to the vet. HELP?

[…] First off, understand. In some cases, this can be good. If your dog has certain health problems, then there are certainly medicines that will make it better and help its quality of life. But many people also see it as bad. We have everything from dog anxiety pills to dog anti-depressants now. We cannot be the only ones seeing a problem with this, right? It is a highly contested issue among people, with many dog lovers having many different views. […]
