Shiba Inu Diary – Sephy shares his views about leash corrections and other aversive based techniques. What do dogs think about leash corrections? Do they make dog walking more pleasant? How well does leash corrections work?
Shiba Diary – Bath Time
Shiba Inu Diary – Sephy hates taking baths in the bathtub. He does not like confined spaces, especially when it is also wet and strange. Ultimately, it just makes more sense to give Shiba Sephy his bath in the backyard. We also made it into a fun chasing game and now Sephy loves bath time.
Why We Don’t Walk Our Dogs
5 common reasons that we come up with for not walking our dogs including the weather, vicious neighborhood dogs, and the ever popular “my dog pulls my arm out during walks”. Walking a dog can be a chore sometimes, however, it is a good way to keep our dogs happy and prevent them from getting into 10 kinds of trouble.
Shiba Diary – Dog Trainer
Shiba Diary – Today, Sephy meets a professional dog trainer for private lessons. This dog trainer is very calm, unafraid, and knows exactly what to do when Shiba Sephy shows aggression. Dog training requires calm energy, good timing, consistency, and proper execution of the techniques.
Shiba Diary – Nail Clipping
Shiba Inu Diary – Sephy’s first experience with nail cutting. It did not go very well because we cut into the quick of the nail and Shiba Sephy started bleeding. We have found that with a Shiba, it is easier to groom nails using a nail grinder rather than a nail clipper. A nail grinder allows us to slowly file down the nail so there is very little chance of hitting the quick.
Shiba Diary – Alpha Rolls
Shiba Inu Diary – Sephy’s first experience and opinion of the alpha-roll technique. Alpha rolls are very risky, causes a lot of stress, and may cause a dog to bite. My attempts at alpha rolls only made my Shiba Inu’s behavior worse, caused him to lose trust in me, and made him resistant to all handling and restraint.
My Dog Training Mistakes
Dog training is often counter-intuitive. When I started learning how to train my dogs, I found a lot of conflicting information. In addition, so-called dog experts would give inconsistent dog training advice and sugar-coat the facts. As a result, I made many mistakes with my first dog, but I also learned a lot from him. Here are some of the most common dog training mistakes that we make.

Dog Threat Down – Ripgut, Foxtail, and Bromus Malus
If you plan on bringing your dog to the park or on hiking trails, make sure to look out for some of these evil weeds. During the hot summer months, the seeds dry up and become extremely sharp. When a dog passes through these dry weeds, the seeds hook onto his fur, and can easily pierce through skin, paws, ears, and even eyes. If inhaled through the nose, they can cause havoc in a dog’s nasal cavity.
Shiba Diary – Visit to the Vet
Shiba Inu Diary – Sephy’s first visit to the vet. The vet had to muzzle Shiba Sephy in order to give him his shots and a physical examination. At the end of the visit, the vet told us to return Sephy because he had a very unbalanced temperament. I later learned that many Shibas are very sensitive to restraint/handling. In addition, their natural mouthiness and stubbornness make them poor patients during visits to the vet.
